\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>It was our great pleasure to receive a grant from the Cardinals Care Foundation last week! What an amazing organization that gave out over $134,000 in grants to multiple organizations throughout St. Louis supporting our youth. Thank you to the\u00a0<\/span>St Louis Cardinals<\/span> Foundation. This afternoon,\u00a0#CardsCare<\/span><\/a>\u00a0distributed over $134,000 to 68 area nonprofit groups that support local kids during our 2018 Spring Grant Ceremony. Splinters and paper cuts? No. Broken bones? Yes, that\u2019s more worthy of a trip to the hospital. So goes a first-aid lesson for a first-grader.<\/p>\n

Treating bumps and scrapes is the first lesson of Little Medical School, a St. Louis County-based company that introduces young learners to health and science.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really want them to know that if their friend falls on the playground, they know they gotta put pressure on that, because that\u2019s going to stop the bleeding,\u201d said Heather Nickel, an instructor with Little Medical School.<\/p>\n

They won\u2019t be physicians by the fifth grade, but the company hopes students will have a foundation in the subject and be inspired to pursue careers in health care.<\/p>\n

A St. Louis-area company is trying to encourage more kids to be health-care professionals. How do you do that? With Play-Doh and fake blood.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nickel is using a classroom at Rockwood School District\u2019s Stanton Elementary for her medical school. A handful of students are staying after school for the six-week program. Little Medical School works in several school districts in the region.<\/p>\n

The lessons are hands on. This week\u2019s subject is the brain, so out comes the Play-Doh. Students pull, squish, flatten and roll the doh into cerebral models.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned that there is a lot of parts to the brain, and if you hit something, you might lose it,\u201d said 7-year-old Caitlyn Kalmer.<\/p>\n

Nickel encourages the kids to protect their brains by wearing a bike helmet. The lesson doesn\u2019t seem to apply to their models. By the end of class, they\u2019ve been smushed and squished beyond recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey see those things, and they can start to see how the physiology works,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re using their hands, and they dive into that and take it with them and remember those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Little Medical School started in Creve Coeur in 1999, first by teaching medical-school residents how to talk with children about health problems. It began working in schools a decade ago and franchised to 40 other cities and three countries. It also sells home lesson kits online.<\/p>\n

Health-care industry-watchers predict a shortage of skilled health workers will worsen through the next decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019\u00a0list of fastest-growing jobs<\/a>\u00a0is filled with health professions such as home health aide and physical therapy assistant.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end, we\u2019re going to talk about professions. And not everyone has to be a doctor that sees patients,\u201d said Nickel. \u201cThere\u2019s a whole world out there in health care. That\u2019s what I hope they walk away with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aaranya Daml, 8, said she wants to do the same thing as her mom: a medical-science liaison.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom says she talks to doctors about better ways to treat patients,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Not all the students in the class want to work in health care, but admit the knowledge will still be helpful.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you learn about it when you\u2019re a kid right now, you might have a memory. So if you remember it now, you won\u2019t have to remember it when you\u2019re older,\u201d said Akshar Patel, who\u2019s 9.<\/p>\n

At the end of the six-week program, the students will earn their white coats, just like real doctors.<\/p>\n

Little Medical School with Cardinals Care at Lewis and Clark Community College<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

GODFREY, IL (November 18, 2017)\u2013 With a Grant received from Cardinals Care, Little Medical School taught a class at Lewis and Clark Community College to children ages 7-12. Local children were very excited to participate in this 3 hour class based off our award-winning Sports Medicine Educational Kit.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The children learned the treatment protocol for an ankle sprain by practicing wrapping it with an ace bandage. They reviewed and made joints of the body through crafts using cups, clay, and popsicle sticks. Another highlight of the class was learning about the Tommy John Surgery; the surgery that baseball pitchers receive on their elbow when the ulnar collateral ligament is injured from too much wear and tear in the elbow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before the class, children took a pre-test on the curriculum and scored an average of 58%.\u00a0 After the class, the students took a post-test and scored a 91% average.
