What parts protect us first?&#8221;<br data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3011\"><br><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3069\" data-end=\"3123\"><strong data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3121\">Step 2: Add the Body&#8217;s First Lines of Defense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3166\">Along the beginning of the pathway, place:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3350\">\n<li data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3219\">\n<p data-start=\"3170\" data-end=\"3219\"><strong data-start=\"3170\" data-end=\"3200\">Paper towels\/sponge strips<\/strong> ? skin barrier<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3220\" data-end=\"3283\">\n<p data-start=\"3222\" data-end=\"3283\"><strong data-start=\"3222\" data-end=\"3248\">Wet cotton ball pieces<\/strong> ? mucus (sticky to trap germs)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3284\" data-end=\"3350\">\n<p data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3350\"><strong data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3318\">A cup labeled \u201cStomach Acid\u201d<\/strong> ? acid that destroys invaders<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3352\" data-end=\"3461\">Kids must physically place germs (marbles) into each area to see whether they get \u201ctrapped\u201d or \u201cbroken down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3463\" data-end=\"3630\"><strong data-start=\"3463\" data-end=\"3486\">Science Connection For Learning:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3486\" data-end=\"3489\">Skin and mucus make up the body\u2019s \u201cinnate\u201d or first-line defenses, systems we are born with that protect us immediately.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3637\" data-end=\"3688\"><strong data-start=\"3640\" data-end=\"3686\">Step 3: Set Up the \u201cWhite Blood Cell Zone\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3689\" data-end=\"3788\">Scatter cotton balls throughout the mid-section of the maze. These represent white blood cells.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3790\" data-end=\"3864\">When a marble (germ) touches a cotton ball, it&#8217;s considered \u201cneutralized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3866\" data-end=\"4044\"><strong data-start=\"3866\" data-end=\"3891\">Extend the Challenge:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3891\" data-end=\"3894\">Give white blood cells \u201cspeed boosts\u201d by allowing cotton balls to move if placed on a spoon or stick, a fun metaphor for activated immune response.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4051\" data-end=\"4102\"><strong data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4100\">Step 4: Add \u201cAntibodies\u201d for Reinforcement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4103\" data-end=\"4223\">Choose a few cotton balls to represent antibodies, they stay in fixed positions and can block multiple germs at once.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4225\" data-end=\"4432\">Research shows antibodies are specially shaped proteins that remember invaders and fight them off faster next time.
