Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast Partners Up With The YMCA of the Treasure Coast

We’re back! Recently we jumped into summer together with the YMCA of the Treasure Coast and did some fun classes in Sports Medicine! Read more about our partnership with them and experiences from our instructors teaching it.

What kind of class did you do with the YMCA of the Treasure Coast?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: We did a Sports Medicine class relating to reaction time! We also did our Digesting Digestion class 🙂

What do you teach in this class?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: We learn about the concept of reaction time and how it relates to Sports Medicine, then do a fun activity together to test our reaction times with a partner. We make it into a sort of competition, so the kids really get into it.

What is it like teaching this class for Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Super fun! The class is larger than the ones done for our after-school programs and summer camps (those max out at usually 12 kids). The team and I like to get creative and think of ways we can do larger classes, keep them fun, and have the kids remain focused.

What were you hesitant about going into this class?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: I’m always nervous doing larger classes because it’s a little easier to “lose control” and have the kids’ focus waver, but I’m confident in the techniques I use that minimize that possibility. I also always make it my goal to make sure the kids have a good time, so there is more pressure that I put on myself to do that as the class size increases.

What do you hope to see happen with the YMCA of the Treasure Coast?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Would love for us to do more classes and maybe even a full summer camp with them one day.

What was the day there at the YMCA of the Treasure Coast like?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: It was a success! These past lessons were on a subject in our Sports Medicine program on reaction time, so the kids have a blast getting up and doing an activity together while learning about a unique topic.

How important do you think these kinds of classes are for the Port Saint Lucie community?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Summer slide is real. I think having these classes available to the kids in our community not only help keep the kids busy but also helps keep them learning. So it’s important!
