Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast + the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County!

We recently partnered up with the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County to inspire kids about the world of healthcare through some fun, hands-on enrichment activities! The program took place thanks to a sponsorship from UnitedHealthcare in their outreach efforts to build healthier communities.

How did it feel teaming up with Little Medical School?

“We’re always looking for ways to introduce Club members to potential career paths. Our partnership with Little Medical School fits perfectly with our workforce readiness program,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County CEO Will Armstead. “It’s so exciting to think that there are future medical professionals within the walls of our Clubs.”

What did the program at the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County look like?

The afternoon began with Club members reciting the Little Medical School oath and receiving white coats. They then built their own stethoscope, participated in a stress ball exercise to demonstrate heart health, and completed a skeleton sticker worksheet to identify bones. The program ended with a Little Medical School graduation leaving each Club member with their own certificate of completion.

What is it like teaching there?

It was exciting to be there for the first time. I think this was one of the largest groups I’ve taught, so it was definitely a different experience from our usual class size. I hope that the kids from this program felt inspired and can envision themselves as future healthcare heroes!” said Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast instructor Melanie.

Are programs like this really important?

“It is important to start the conversation about STEM careers early. Kids as young as seven and eight years old will tell you they are not good at math and science. Our role-playing programming shows them that they are, and they could be future doctors, nurses or pharmacists if they study hard!” said Little Medical School founder, Dr. Mary Mason.
