Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast Brings Summer Camps In STEM To Vero Beach

We recently went back to Saint Edward’s School in Vero Beach to bring our summer camps in STEM. We’ve been working with them for some time now to provide meaningful educational enrichment to the kids in our community. Read more about our partnership with them and experiences from our instructors teaching it.

What kind of summer camps in STEM have you done with Saint Edward’s School?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Last summer, we did one of our Little Doctor School summer camps and a Little Veterinarian School summer camp. We’ve also done our Wilderness Medicine after-school program and summer camp!

What do you plan to teach there this summer?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: We have a few camps lined up there throughout the summer. They’re our Little Veterinarian School and our Little Doctor School summer camps.

What is it like teaching there for Little Medical School of the Treasure Coast?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Oh the kids love these camps. They get to explore really cool topics like laceration care, x-rays, nose-to-tail exams, and anatomy. It’s still fun enough that it doesn’t feel like learning for them. They make new friends during the week and get to spend their time learning something they normally wouldn’t in school.

What were you hesitant about going into this summer there?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: For me, nothing! I love teaching our programs and summer camps in STEM at Saint Edward’s School. We’ve been lucky to work with them for a while now and it’s always meaningful going back. Sometimes I see some old students too. They say hi and wave and we all ask each other how we’ve been.

What do you hope to do differently the next time you’re there?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: It would be really great to explore doing different kinds of events with them. I love finding ways to get involved with our community more and continue helping build each other up.

What was the last day of the summer camps at Saint Edward’s like?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Super cute, we snapped lots of photos to remember the moment. We made sure to play a lot of review games so we can make sure they got down all the core concepts and then we graduated! Parents love to see them come home with a diploma and a sense of accomplishment.

How important do you think this kind of educational summer camp is for the Vero Beach community?

Instructor Ms. Melanie: Super important, no doubt. Now more than ever too as the need for medical professionals increases. Florida has such an amazing place for innovation and leadership in the medical community. To be able to continue to support that, it’s the best. Our founder once said she hopes to see future medical school classes filled with Little Medical School graduates, and I feel the same exact way! These summer camps in STEM really encourage kids to see healthcare as a potential career for them.
